Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a race?

No — it’s a convoy. Fun, teamwork and camaraderie come first.

What is a typical day like on the Monte Carlo or Bust rally?

Each morning we meet at an agreed start point, usually between 10am and 11am depending on that day’s distance. We aim to travel in convoy where practical, stopping for fuel, food and breaks along the way.

Once we reach the planned destination, everyone heads to their chosen accommodation. Most evenings we arrange a group meal, but attendance is completely optional. The next morning, we regroup at the agreed start point and set off again.

What happens if I get lost?

We ask all participants to download the Life360 app. Everyone is added to the Monte Carlo or Bust group so we can see where cars are during the trip. If anyone takes a wrong turn or falls behind, we can easily find them and help them rejoin the convoy.

Does my car really have to cost under £1,000?

Yes! That’s a key part of the fun and challenge. As long as the car is road‑legal and within budget, it’s eligible.

Can I share a car?

Yes — car‑sharing is encouraged. Ideally each car should have at least two people, but more is absolutely fine.

Do I need mechanical skills?

No. While basic mechanical knowledge is always useful on a long road trip, it isn’t required. There will be car‑savvy people in the convoy and a support vehicle on hand if anyone needs help.

What about accommodation?

We provide a list of recommended hotels for each stop, but you are free to book any hotel, B&B or Airbnb you prefer. If you’d like to share accommodation to reduce costs, that’s no problem.

Can I join solo?

Yes! Solo drivers are very welcome. We’ll do our best to pair you with another solo traveller. If we can’t, we’ll try to place you in an existing car that has space. In that case, you’ll be expected to share the cost of buying and running the car.

What does it cost to take part in the rally?

There are two main costs involved in taking part in the Monte Carlo or Bust Rally:

1. Registration fee – £100 per car

Each car pays a £100 registration fee, due by 31 March 2026. This covers your rally pack, which includes:

Any money left over from registration fees will be shared equally between the five supported charities.

2. Charity contribution – £250 per person

Each participant pays a £250 charity contribution, due by 30 April 2026. This will be split equally between the five charities supported by the rally.

If you would like to raise additional money on top of this, you can set up your own fundraising page. This can be in aid of any of the five rally charities, or a different charitable cause of your choice.

What charities does Monte Carlo or Bust support?

We support a number of charities that mean a great deal to those involved in organising the rally. You can read about each one on our Supported Charities page.

How does the charity donation work?

Each participant pays a £250 charity contribution which is divided equally between the five supported charities.

In addition, you are welcome to create your own JustGiving or other fundraising page if you would like to raise extra money. This can support one or more of the rally’s charities, or a different charity that is important to you.

All of this is on top of simply taking part in the rally, which helps to raise awareness of the charities through your journey, photos and updates.

Can I buy any car?

Yes — you can source your own car, as long as it’s road‑legal and costs £1,000 or less. If you’d like help finding something with character, the Monte Carlo or Bust team can also assist. To give you an idea of what’s possible, here are some example cars you could pick up for under £1,000:

What documents do I need?

You’ll need a valid driving licence and the correct car documentation for travelling through France and Monaco, including insurance that covers you for driving abroad.

What other costs are involved?

In addition to buying the car, you’ll need to cover your own fuel, tolls, insurance, accommodation and food. You can keep things budget‑friendly or treat yourself to 5‑star hotels and fine dining — it’s entirely up to you.

Do I need to decorate the car?

No, decorating the car is not compulsory — but it is strongly encouraged and adds a huge amount to the fun and atmosphere of the rally.

We provide Monte Carlo or Bust decals and flags as part of your registration pack, and you are very welcome to add your own themes, decorations or artwork. Travelling in fancy dress is also encouraged.

If you’re looking for decoration ideas, there are lots of great examples from other banger rallies across Europe. View decoration ideas.

The aim is to have fun, stand out and make the trip as memorable as possible.
